Safe Room welcomes Skatebard to BK
The Norwegian maestro brings his far-reaching electronic textures to Bangkok on 26th October.
While there are certainly a handful of committed and skilled DJs and promoters in Bangkok, it’s difficult to think of a venue that consistently pushes the boat out to bring in top-quality international talent from across the gamut of esoteric music as much Safe Room has been doing in recent times.
The latest announcement from their line-up that caught our attention is the outstanding booking of Skatebard, who’s divergent sound incorporates Detroit inspired house, electro, techno, cosmic disco and neo-Italo. At times fierce, others soothing - however disparate this may appear on the surface - the common thread is supreme quality and an underlying emotion which perhaps hints at his Scandinavian roots (there certainly seems to be something in the water over there).
He’s been putting out hot records since the early 2000s, on labels including Full Pupp, Bordello A Parigi, Radius Records, Supersoul Recordings, Tellè Records, as well as his on Digitalo Enterprises. As has become the custom for us on Cosmic Tiger, we decided to play one of our picks from his extensive body of work to get you in the mood. We’ve gone for his 2010 effort ‘Starwatcher II’. Sparse and reverb-heavy drums march on under melancholic pads and string motifs, chugging away effortlessly before making way for urgent arpeggios and delayed synth stabs which transport the cut into a whole new territory. Subtly brilliant, though not necessarily indicative of what the electro-chameleon might bring to the table at Safe Room. That would be hard to guess, but whatever he throws down, it’s sure to be pure fire. Bangkok based music heads, this comes highly recommended
